La erosión del agua en el río Ctalamochita, dejó al descubierto en la barranca un presunto caparazón de un gliptodonte, gigantesco mamífero prehistórico. Este herbívoro proliferó en la era cuaternaria en la zona pampeana y otras regiones de América del Sur.
Lamentablemente, los restos no se encuentran en buen estado de conservación producto de la misma erosión de las aguas y la intervención del hombre que al hallarlos extrajo algunas de sus partes.
No se da el lugar preciso del importante hallazgo para evitar mayor deterioro del material prehistórico.
Los gliptodontes tenían una envergadura de 1,80 metros de alto, 3 metros de largo y un peso aproximado a 1,5 toneladas. Habitó hasta hace 8.500 años.
Al igual que los armadillos actuales, entre ellos las mulitas, peludos y tatús, los gliptodontes poseían una coraza ósea muy característica. Algunas especies de ambos grupos convivieron durante parte del cuaternario, pero mientras que los gliptodontes se extinguieron, los armadillos lograron sobrevivir hasta la actualidad.
Vale destacar que Córdoba, al igual que el resto de las provincias, por la reforma de la Constitución Nacional de 1994, son las encargadas de custodiar los materiales paleontológicos hallados en sus territorios y de autorizar exploraciones, extracciones, préstamos y traslados de esos materiales dentro del territorio nacional.
